Can we start a constructive debate about peace? how, why? what would be the conditions we both need? what are the obstacles? how do we resolve them?

My experience, of almost 10 years, of participating in joint Arab-Jewish organizations has taught me that to some extent, we have all been victims of our history. This is true for the Lebanese people as well. When we feel victimized, it is hard for us to empathize with somebody else’s suffering, especially if they are your enemy. Also, in Israel, if you speak about the suffering of the Lebanese people during the last war, or about the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the occupied territories you are automatically considered unpatriotic. It is very natural for one to sympathize more with the suffering of their own people/nation/religion, and it is fine, but we must understand that under no conditions there will be real peace and reconciliation between people as long as we blind ourselves to our enemy’s pain. We must also, take responsibility for the pain that we caused to the Palestinian people and to the people of Lebanon.

I agree with Miriam. During the war, everyone here in Israel, no matter what their peacetime political views became unquestioning patriots. Everyone spoke with the same voice. Katushyas were being fired from Beirut apartment buildings no matter how much evidence existed to prove this impossible.

It was as if there was a radio controlled switch in everyones head. I dont watch TV and I can only assume that this was the cause. It was my first experience of war as an Israeli citisen and I had no idea of the rules.

1) During war you think what we tell you to think.
2) During war you ignore anything that blatantly dissproves what we tell you.
3) During war you ostrecise anyone who tries to tell you different from what we tell you.

Powerful stuff!

How to achieve peace? First the nation of Israel has to realise that the war has already been fought and won in their heads. We cant reach out to you until we understand that we have been the victms of heavy propoganda all our lives.

I agree with you mike.
All of us, especially Israel, who has a strong army, should emerge out of the victim state of mind and start thinking about the future.
Is this how we want to bring up our children ? is this the world we want to live in ?
I will try to think of some constructive actions we can do to proceed with this.

I just wanted to get on here today and let you know that I just love you... all of you in Palestine, Lebannon and Israel and I just want to say, God bless you all! God loves you and I know that He will make a way... where there seems to be no way (for peace).

Peace to you, and blessing...

Love, Laura
