Hello there:

I am Khaled Jamoos a palestinian guy from Nablus, west bank, Palestine who's studying in London computer engineering,21 years old, human being (claim to be) and angry. I would love to see people posting some stuff here as it might be one of the few times that we could do something through this new wonder of this planet, the internet, if not now may be later.

My first topic that i want to hear from whoever read this is Please tell me what is the first thing that comes up to your mind when you hear Army, Armed Forces or whatever you call it It is just a curious observation that I want to see.

Regards all

Hi Khaled, Salaam Alecum. I am from London living in Israel. The word army fills me with negative thoughts. I dont understand why everyone needs so many guns and bombs. I also dont understand why everyone expects me to hate you because you have the koran and I have the torah.

Hi khaled, mike

I have mixes feelings about army and armed forces. I hate what we are doing in Gaza and Lebanon, I become so sad whenever I hear the news.
And, I have a side in me that is relieved that there is a power that can protect me. I know that had we done things otherwise, we may not have had the need for this strong army, but we didn't, and we are where we are. And we were attacked and destroyed by others many many times in the past. And I can't forget this past, as I am sure, you can't forget yours, khaled.
So what to do now? I don't have any inteligent answers, just some feelings and thoughts.
goodday, michal

As a pacifist, I have only negative associations with armies and military organizations of any sort (except in case of mutiny against institutionalized violence, which does not involve hurting innocent people - this is the anarchist side in me).

I find the military to be evil, both on the personal and global level.

On the personal level, militaries are cold institutions which endeavor to forge people's unique and complex psychological structure into nothing more than killing machines. In this way, the military serves the purposes of the institution and government to keep people thoughtless, in their places, and doing anything that they are told, regardless of emotional and moral price.

On the political level, armies function as a violent and destructive force, which works on the global level in quite the same way as on the personal. The army, as a large body, would always try to expand itself regardless of means and morals, and will destroy anything in its path there - especially since the power to do this was bestowed upon it by the system.

I cannot find anything at all positive with armies. People can just as well defend themselves individually, or through the formation of small militias. I reject the idea of defending whole countries, since I am against the idea of countries.

As for the IDF in specific, my first associations are war crimes, cruelty and racism.

As for the lebanese army: inexistant, powerless, useless. It is just a machine where dumb people get dumber.

Smelly men, no sleep and homesickness.
Growing up in Israel, I remeber my mother telling me that maybe by the time I'm 18 there'll be peace, and I won't have to serve in the army. Turned out she was wrong. I must admit to having mixed feelings. I served my time in the army, rather than refusing. I felt that I could do more good by treating people right than by sitting in prison. I was a terrible soldier I guess. I'm outright against this current little war, and have beenm since the begining. However, I can never be sure the media\government aren't correct in their statements about the inevitability of this conflict, and better sooner than later.
Hope someone puts an end to it, and the sooner the better.
Benny, Jerusalem.

hey,

For Me Army= targets, The end without the way to it, people are targets or a force that can get hurt or die.

I can't understand how Generals in both sides sending soliders to die, killing civilians, How can they live with themselves after???

For keren Army = a lot of money being spent that could have been used for purpeses of peace, education, ecology, coopration, work places etc...

K+S

Hi Khaled and everyone else,
Many Israelis are opposed to the army and to military service, including myself. I grew up in the U.S. and will never forget the Vietnam vets who spoke at my high school - they said it was better to sit in prison than to serve in the Vietnam war. Those who returned from the war came back destroyed mentally and physcially. I see the same here in Israel, as this society also suffers from the same effects of war and militarization. It's better to refuse to serve and sit in prison than to murder innocent Palestinians and Lebanese. Unfortunately, Israelis are brainwashed from a young age in to believing that all soldiers are "good" and that everyone must serve in the army. I have a five year old daughter who learned this in her preschool. Luckily, she has me as a mother!

I'm going to be a bit different here: I'm serving in the IDF at the moment, and although there are plenty of negative associations that jump to mind: 'uniformity', 'power struggles', 'brutality' and 'trigger-happiness'; on the whole I don't regret that I am in the army.

The army, for me at least, is a warm family, it teaches responsibity for friends, and for the country, it makes you grow up quickly and forces you to have to make mature decisions, its representing the people as well as being part of the people, its helping others in any way you can, whether military or not.

I completely understand why everyone else has said what they said, and I understand why you're angry too, Khaled. But I prefer to solve my problems with the army by being part of it, and not throwing out tired slogans against it.

Here's hoping the war ends tomorrow, Josh
